Young librarian Karl Konrad Koreander is a kind boy, but a little insecure—except when he's in the wonderful library of the strange Tadeo Tillman Trutz. Karl feels safe and secure there, until one day Tadeo disappears and Karl embarks on a journey through the library's labyrinth of stacks. At the end of the journey, Karl discovers that he has traveled to the borderlands of fantasy. There, the fearful King Xayíde is about to imprison the young empress in one of the dungeons below the Dark Tower of Marble, and leave the country to the mercy of the Nothing that will devour it all.
